Ongoing design support for a journalism education non-profit.
Timeframe: 2016-2017
Company: First Draft
Role: Designer
First Draft News is a non-profit dedicated to improving skills and standards in the reporting and sharing of information that emerges online. It focuses on equipping news outlets and journalists with the tools they need to verify and reportin today's every changing news landscape.
I have provided ongoing support for the organization in many forms including branding, web design, and print design. Serving as their go-to designer, I tackled every design need from the smallest Twitter card to an entire series of white papers.
A large part of my work with First Draft news was working on icons and diagrams to help clearly illustrate the complexities facing journalists in news verification.
I developed an icon system to identify the seven types of mis-information for First Draft News to use on social media and report.
I designed a full eyewitness media timeline for an upcoming tradeshow event. This timeline features key moments in recent history where social media coverage of news events changed the landscape of reporting.
The timeline was implemented as pop-up banners for easy transportation. It features a sticker timeline for attendees to mark their own milestones of reporting in social media, as well as a testimonial timeline for users to note their experiences on stickers.
Over the course of 2016 and 2017, I worked with the First Draft News team to develop and design a series of three white papers for print and digital distribution. These handbooks serve as go-to resources for journalists to reference on a variety of topics.
I sourced photography, illustrated core concepts, and laid out these multi-page reports.
In preparation for the French election in 2016, First Draft News launched a new verification project that brought dozens of regional, national, and international news sources together. Under Cross Check, all news sources collaborated on verifying news reports and calling out misinformation.
I created the logo, branding, and website design for the entire project.
